Book Launch of Human Justice - the fourth book in the Monument Fellowship series

You can now catch up on the Humane Justice book launch in a two part recording of the event in collaboration with the Monument Fellowship and our partners working in the criminal justice system.
Hosted by Lisa Rowles, our Director of Innovation and Design and Iman Haji, Senior Evidence and Impact Officer, part one features an introduction to our work, followed by speakers Mark Woodruff from the Monument Trust and Poet Mr Gee, exploring the question ‘What role do Kindness, Hope and Compassion have to play in the criminal justice system?’
Part two features book contributor Brenda Birungi (aka Lady Unchained), who features in the book and our podcast, as well as further information about the fifth and final book in the series which will be open to submissions shortly.

Biographies

Mr Gee 

Mr Gee has performed poetry for two decades. Perhaps best known as the “Poet Laureate” on Russell Brand’s infamous Radio show, he’s toured the world & had his work featured in The Times & The Guardian. He presented “Bespoken Word”, “Rhyme & Reason” & “Poetic Justice” all on Radio 4, the latter of which focused on his extensive prison rehabilitation work. He also featured on BBC 2’s BAFTA nominated program “Poetry Between the Lines”. 

Brenda Birungi (aka Lady Unchained)

Brenda, who also goes by the name Lady Unchained, is living proof for building a life after prison. Through poetry she tells her own personal story and the stories of those with experience of the criminal justice system; stories often left untold because of shame, stigma and negative labels. With the support of friends, she was inspired to set up Unchained Poetry – a platform for artists with lived experience. She regularly works with various charities & hosts Unchained Nights in partnership with Artsadmin at Toybee Stations, a night of inspirational storytelling, through poetry and music, performed by artists with lived experience.

Humane Justice - Monument Fellowship

Humane Justice, curated by Khulisa, is the fourth book in the series from the Monument Fellowship, features a collection of essays, poetry and art, that highlights the role kindness, hope and compassion play in the criminal justice system. 

Authors include those with lived experience, academics, legal experts and practitioners from across the system from police, courts, prison and probation. 

The book includes a foreword from philanthropist and prison reformer Lady Edwina Grosvenor and  contributions from Dr Peter Neyroud CBE QPM OhD, His Honour John Samuels QC, and Niven Rennie (Glasgow’s Violence Reduction Unit) amongst many other fascinating authors. Insights are gleaned about finding a place for these principles within the system from England, Scotland,Spain, the Philippines, Canada and the USA

We are joined in the fellowship by seven members including; The Centre for Justice Innovation, CLINKS, Diagrama UK, Lemos & Crane (The Good Prison), Koestler Arts, The National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, and Restorative Solutions.
