We are thrilled to announce that we have been selected as finalists in the Charity Governance Awards 2022, in the category of ‘Covid-19 Response: Embracing Opportunity and Harnessing Risk’! The award, which is hosted by The Clothworkers’ Company, recognises charities who show good governance, especially in the climate of Covid-19.
Khulisa were recognised for responding rapidly to meet the increased demand from young people for the services we offer, all whilst adapting to the impact that Covid had on the organisation.
For vulnerable young people isolating in harmful environments, the decreased access to school and youth clubs was a devastating blow to those already in need. The lockdown drastically hit our projected annual income, while we attempted to adapt our programmes and respond to the crisis.
Khulisa were shortlisted for our response to this opportunity by rapidly accelerating our digital strategy, to provide for young people in need, all whilst coping with the change in our funding circumstances.
In particular, with this nomination the judges praised our board for stepping up their already high engagement to support the charity in redesigning programmes for online delivery. They also recognised the way in which the board and senior leadership team assessed the risk and impact, before speaking with funding and delivery partners to assess their appetite for adapting in the proposed way.
The Clothworkers’ Company were especially impressed with the speed at which Khulisa adapted to Covid. Adapting in a matter of weeks, we were able to respond as fast as possible to the critical needs of the young people who relied on our services. Within three months, we had reached more than 2,000 people through our digital interventions and online toolkits. This reinvention of how Khulisa worked also opened the door to new partnerships and further funding opportunities.
We’re delighted to see such positive reviews of our work, and we can’t wait to see if we will be recognised with an award!
The results will be announced on 26 May. Best of luck to everyone who has been shortlisted!
